Wisdom Teeth Removal

Do Wisdom Teeth Always Have to Be Removed?

The third molars are better known as wisdom teeth, and when they come in, they may cause numerous dental issues. Problematic wisdom teeth often cause swelling, pain, and the shifting of other teeth. Even without these issues, wisdom teeth are simply more prone to problems. Generally appearing between the ages of 16 and 25, wisdom teeth frequently crowd other teeth when they come in because of insufficient space in the mouth. Sometimes wisdom teeth grow in odd, sideways angles below the gumline and are never positioned properly to break the gums, creating an impaction. In other cases, wisdom teeth only partially emerge from the gums, which can result in an infection-prone flap forming around the tooth that attracts bacteria and debris. In instances like these, extraction is often necessary to prevent or stop damage to the rest of a patient’s teeth, as well as to relieve pain.

While wisdom teeth are often removed because of crowding, impaction, or infection, it is possible for them to come in without issue. Even wisdom teeth that appear to come in normally, however, need to be evaluated as they’re more frequently affected by infection or disease. A thorough examination that includes x-rays is required to accurately assess the position and condition of wisdom teeth.

At the Arizona Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we have decades of experience with wisdom teeth and other conditions requiring oral surgery. You can rely on us for honest but compassionate guidance. We know many people are hesitant to see the oral surgeon out of fear, and we’ll do everything we can to relieve your worries and minimize discomfort.

Is the Procedure Painful?

Our dentist, Dr. Charles Loschiavo, provides minimally invasive procedures that leave as much soft tissue and bone intact as possible, which reduces swelling and pain. Dental anesthesia is used to ensure patients are comfortable and pain-free during wisdom tooth extraction. We take patient comfort very seriously and always seek to minimize any discomfort. We can provide local or general anesthesia, as well as nitrous oxide sedation for relaxation if needed. Patients are also prescribed medication for post-operative soreness.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Every person’s recovery is different after wisdom teeth removal, but in most cases the recovery period is only a few days. Immediately following surgery, you may have swelling and mild discomfort. Cold compresses can help with the swelling, and medication can offer relief from any tenderness. You’ll also be provided with detailed instructions on caring for your mouth post-surgery to prevent complications and facilitate healing.
